Foreign media far more interested than U.S. media in new law countering Iran in Western Hemisphere

Yesterday President Obama signed HR Bill 3783, Countering Iran in the Western Hemisphere Act of 2012 after it was overwhelmingly passed by both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. Searching Google News, CNN, and Fox News websites – no U.S. media reported on the president’s signing the bill as of this post.

Aljazeera, Iran’s state controlled Press TV, and the MEK’s house organ, the NCR-Iran, however, were all quick to report on it. Today, the BBC Persian TV channel interviewed me about the background and effect of the new law.

The fiscal cliff, a self-inflicted wound afflicting the American economy, continues to fully occupy the U.S. media while the rest of the world recognizes (or at least hopes) that the United States will eventually turn its attention to other issues. Some U.S. citizens may be surprised to learn that no senator and only six representatives voted against a law that found the following:

  • Iran has signed multiple economic and security agreements with Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to lessen the blow of international sanctions on Iran
  • Hezbollah is the “most technically capable terrorist group in the world” and works in concert with the Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force
  • Hezbollah and other Iranian proxies have generated revenues in Latin America from criminal enterprises including drug and arms trafficking, pirated software and music, money laundering, and forged travel documents.

What goes unsaid in the Congressional findings is the robust presence that Hezbollah has in the United States where it conducts similar criminal enterprises and sucks millions of dollars in ill-gotten gains out of this country, aided by a policy of not actively pursuing criminal investigation and prosecution of Hezbollah criminal activities.

Within 180 days from now the U.S. State Department is required by the new law to file with the Congress a report describing the presence and operations of the IRGC and Hezbollah in the Western Hemisphere, including a description of the income generated by its criminal and legitimate enterprises and the extent of Quds Force and Hezbollah activity at the U.S. borders with Mexico and Canada. Perhaps when that report is filed, the U.S. media  will be more interested.

Unless, of course, the fiscal cliff crisis is fixed with a promise to resolve the issue within six months.
